Battlestar Galactica Discussion List Rewritten: 03-18-97 ------------------------------------------------------------ "There are those who believe, that life here... began out there" The Battlestar Galactica discussion list began quite some time ago and has remained one of the prominent forums regarding the television show. In July of 1996 it migrated to it's current home on it's ever-present journey to find a mythical planet.. known as Earth... The Battlestar Galactica list (BSG-THEME) is operated by Kriss Tessin (kriss@lib01.ferris.edu) and Lee Storm (lstorm@webspan.net). It is a grouping of fans of the television series at no cost and is open to anyone who wishes to join in. The volume on the list varies but it is not unreasonable to find 20-60 messages a day from the list. Digest format is NOT available due to host constraints.. sorry folks :( ----------------------------------------------------------- List Command Information All commands should be sent to MAISER@LIB01.FERRIS.EDU Please _DO_ _NOT_ send mail commands to the list itself. It is important to avoid using "signature files" when sending commands as the server will not be able to interpret them and you will receive error messages. Be sure to use the same e-mail account when issuing commands as the one that is on the list. You should leave SUBJECT fields blank as well when sending commands to "Maiser" (Mail Server). For those who have mailing systems which do not allow blank or "null" subject lines, a backslash (\) by itself will often solve the problem. Put the command as your message text. Commands are as follows: To SUBSCRIBE to the list: subscribe bsg-theme To REVIEW list members (Get e-mail addresses for all subscribed members): review bsg-theme To UNSUBSCRIBE from the list: unsubscribe bsg-theme Again REMEMBER to send the unsubscribe command from the same account that you subscribed from in order to remove you from the list, and PLEASE delete any signature file when issuing _any_ command to the "Maiser" server. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Sending mail to the list for other members to read To send mail to the list address the letter to: BSG-THEME@LIB01.FERRIS.EDU When sending replies be careful about quoting large volumes of information. You are highly encouraged to cut-paste replies to only include relevant pieces. Also make sure the "sendto:" of the e-mail only has the address for the list on it ONCE (don't use "Reply to all" just use "Reply to Sender" which is the list itself). If your working with a mailer that is new to you and do not know how to cut/paste, please write to Lee Storm, List Moderator, lstorm@webspan.net, and she will try to assist you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Removal Policies You may be removed from the list at any time without notice. Such removals are generally due to errors with accounts, unknown users, or other problems which may be causing the list itself to receive an inordinate amount of bounced messages or error mail. Other reasons for removal are due to repeated inappropriate posts. In such cases, you will receive a warning first; if the inappropriate posting continues, a second warning will be sent; further infractions will result in removal from the list. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Posting Netiquette This list was created for one and only one reason, to discuss the Television series Battlestar Galactica. That said I ask that everyone follow the below rules on posting. If you do not follow these rules I may ask you to cease posting such mail, if it continues I may warn, if it continues still I may pull people from the list. I apologize if this sounds harsh and rest assured the LAST thing I want to do is turn into a "Ward Cleaver" parent of this list.. but I think in the past we have had quite a few inappropriate mails... Again I dislike doing this but being the list moderator am in the best position to step up to the bully-pulpit for repeated inappropriate mailings. What Constitutes Inappropriate Posts? Flaming -- A term used to denote people who verbally abuse, berate, swear or otherwise try to embarrass, and put down another person. Flames often stem from disagreement on a given subject or a misunderstanding. They are heavily frowned upon by list members as well as the moderator. Prolonged Off-Topic Threads -- Topics which have nothing to do with Battlestar Galactica. Occasionally, Off-Topic posts will come up; it's strongly encouraged to respond to these posts privately. Responding to the list will only serve to generate a prolonged Off-Topic Thread which will inevitably lead to other OT threads, etc. Please keep in mind that this is the Battlestar Galactica list; topics brought to the list _should_ reflect some aspect of the BSG Universe. Gripes -- If someone has a problem or a grievance with another lister, _Please_ take this to private mail! If you want my assistance, please write to me at lstorm@webspan.net; I would be more than happy to help. Now then.. what constitutes good mails? ANYTHING RELATING TO BSG. Examples: Trivia on cast/crew, models, toys, shows relating to BSG (i.e. Dirk's favorite munchy, mention of other films/shows/etc. where our beloved BG cast performed, and so-on; Questions relating to BSG; Any information on net resources, books, events, fan fic, etc., relating to BSG; Religious, social, and other references _As Long As They Relate To The BSG Universe_. (Strong emphasis there, as we have had flame wars and Off-Topic threads about such things.) Respect for those reading your posts is _very_ important! Remember the rule: Let us agree to disagree... we will not all agree on everything (Hey--I am one of the few who likes G80, for example, :P) but again, this is a discussion list.. nothing more.. Disagreements can sometimes bring forth other points of view previously never explored. If a disagreement starts turning into a flame war or a prolonged Off-Topic thread, however, action may need to be taken by the moderator. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- General Netiquette: Subject Lines _MUST_ reflect the topic of discussion. If a subject line reads "Question--Where's Laurette Now?", then the information should reflect that topic _ONLY_. If the discussion starts to change threads, CHANGE THE SUBJECT LINE! For those who like to sort by subject, it is most distressing to find something on landing bays when one is expecting to read about Laurette Spang! Article Requoting should be kept to only the _relevant_ sections you wish to address in your response. Many of the list members have to pay by the bandwidth or only have a certain amount of space allotted to them. If you don't know how to cut/paste/edit, let me know and I'll be glad to find someone from the list who will be able to talk you through. One-Liner "Me Too" messages add nothing to the discussion and only serve to create unnecessary traffic. If someone posts they think Sheba is a goddess, rather than a "Me Too", please let the list know _why_ you agree (or disagree). Sig Files can be very creative and beautiful, but they can also be _long_! In the interest of good netiquette, please limit them to a maximum of _8_ lines in order to save bandwidth. Signing your post is important! Many of us have some pretty funky e-mail headers which conveys nothing of who sent it, and some have mailers which chop out sig files. So popping your name at the end of your post will really help. :-) We get new people to the list all the time and the only way they learn how things work is to emulate the veterans... remember every message we send serves as an example to a new list member desperate to join in on the conversation but unsure what to say or how to say it. Ok enough ranting (I can hear my soap-box about ready to break so I'd better step down)... but lets all try to keep these things in mind. May the Lords of Kobol be with you. :-) Lee Storm, List Moderator
