Topic: Saga the Rock Opera of Space Operas! Date: Tue, 12 Sep 1995 From: LizBeth Subject: Just to cause some trouble :) Hi All! First off, thanks to everyone who sent me part nine. But, here's the real meat of my message. It appears the search for a job has taken a toll on my brain cells (either that, or my allergy medication is working _way_ to well....), in either case, I got to thinking...... What would happen if BSG was a rock musical? Now I'm serious here. If we were to soundtrack Our Heroes to a rock musical, what songs would we use? BTW, cross-sex singing is Okay for this idea (i.e., songs sung by men can be sung by female characters and vica versa) since we don't want to limit ourselves..... Here's some ideas to get the ball rolling: BTW, to make life easier, I'm sticking with Saga..... "Peace Train" Cat Stevens Baltar celebrating the Council of 12's decision to sign the Peace Treaty. Key Line: "I've been trying lately, thinking about the good things to come...." "(Caprican) Tune" Paul Simon (acutal title, "American Tune") Adama as he walks among the rubble of his home in Saga. Key Line: "It's all right, it's all right, you can't be forever blessed..." "I Think I'll Disappear Now" Crash Test Dummies Starbuck's thoughts when Athena tells him to go away in the usually cut "locker room" scene in Saga. Key Line: "Aren't you going to miss me? Aren't you going to even say one thing to me anymore?" "Losing My Religion" REM After Apollo chews out Starbuck for his smart remarks on the Gemini Frieghter, he sings this ditty. (By the way, the song title actually is a southernism meaning "I'm at the end of my rope.") Key Line: "That's me in the corner. That's me in the spotlight, losing my religion..." "St. Theresa" Joan Osborne Cassie singing about her days as a socialator in the Frieghter Gemini before Starbuck, Apollo and Boomer make their appearance. The whole song, really. Since it's about prostitution. "Cry Like an Angel" Shawn Colvin Serina to Apollo as she escorts him off her level of the Rising Star after he cheers up Boxey and he says that sometimes you have to win a few of the little ones after losing the big one. Key Line: "I can hear you calling, don't have to call so loud. I see you falling, don't have to walk so proud...." "Because the Night" Patty Smyth Group Cassie convincing Starbuck that since his life obviously stinks, he should forget his cares for awhile in a launch tube. Key Line: "Take me now, baby as I am. Hold me close and try to understand..." "Big Yellow Taxi" Amy Grant Athena after catching Starbuck and Cassie in the launch tube during saga as she mulls over losing everything in the destruction and seeing her love-life threatened. Key Line: "...You don't know what you've got till it's gone. They paved paradise and put up a parking lot." "Wild, Wild Life" Talking Heads Starbuck to Boomer as he talks about getting the "Space Supremes" on the Star Circuit and how wonderful Carillon is. Key Line: "Check out mister business man, oh-oh, it's a wild, wild life...." "Something's Always Wrong" Toad the Wet Sprocket Adama as he hears about Sire Uri's handing out passes to Carillon like they were leaves on trees during saga. Key Line: "Something's always wrong...." "Run Around" Blues Traveller Athena to Starbuck when she confronts him at Carillon's gambling tables about Cassie. Key Line: "And I'll lie too and say I don't mind, for as we seek so shall we find. And when you're feeling open I'll still be here..." "Humans (are Here)" T-Bone Bennett (actually title, "Humans from Earth) Sire Uri as he starts up the big award ceremony on Carillon. Key Line: "You have nothing at all to fear, I think we're gonna like it here." "Clouds" Judy Collins Apollo to Starbuck as he approaches the Galactica after they blew up Carillon and the Imperious Leader's baseship. Key Line: "I really don't know life at all...." More suggestions folks! Let's make Saga the Rock Opera of Space Operas! Liz ;) Date: Wed, 13 Sep 1995 From: Michele L Martin Subject: Re: Just to cause some trouble :) > Hi All! Oh no. Just when we thought it was safe to read the mailing list again. She's baaccckkk..... :) >> But, here's the real meat of my message. Run away!!! Sorry, Liz, but this is perhaps the wackiest thing to pop up on the list in a long time... >> What would happen if BSG was a rock musical? Now I'm serious here. If we were to soundtrack Our Heroes to a rock musical, what songs would we use? BTW, cross-sex singing is Okay for this idea (i.e., songs sung by men can be sung by female characters and vica versa) since we don't want to limit ourselves.....<< Hmm--can we do _all_ the eps? Can we postulate what unimportant characters are singing in the "background". For instance, can we have a part when all the poor civilians cramped in the multitude of ships break into a rousing chorus of "Sloop John B" by the Beach Boys? Key line: "I wanna go home, why don't they let me go home? This is the worst trip I've ever been on." I'd have to go back and do a more extensive listening/thumbing through of my tape collection to come up with better ideas. Hmm--how about Sheba to Cassiopeia just after Starbuck's run off to the Celestra to see Aurora: "House of Love" by Amy Grant. Just a thought. Michele Date: Wed, 13 Sep 1995 From: Charles Norris Subject: Re: Just to cause some trouble :) uh oh Michele...now ya hadda go 'n' open that can o' worms! Thanks kiddo! My thots: "A Pirate Looks at 40" Jimmy Buffet That'd be Cain's theme! "Cannons don't thunder, there's nothin' to plunder..." "Witchy Woman" The Guess Who There's Siress Bellaby saddling up to the bar.... "Woooooooooooo hoo witchy wooooooooman, she got the moon in 'er eyes!" "Hotel California" The Eagles... This one takes me back to the days on Carillon :))) "We are programmed to receive...you can check out any time you like but you can never leave!" "Waiting for a Girl Like You" Foreigner Apollo muses over this one as he gazes into oblivion like a little kid after his first real kiss, after Sheba plants the big one on him in THOG "This heart of mine has been hurt before; this time I wanna be sure..." "Legs" ZZ Top The Tucanas...nuff said! :) Scuse me while I go think up s'more... **************************************** * Charles D. Song: "Love Is the Answer", England Dan and John Ford Coley Adama addresses the crowds on Caprica after Serina and onlookers question him about whatever hopes of fighting back there are... Key Lines: "Tell me are we alive? Or just a dying planet, what are the chances?..." Song: "Goodbye Stranger", Supertramp The planet Carillon explodes into oblivion with the baseship above it, as our heroes muse about the hunk of metal in the middle of nowhere being home... Key lines: "Goodbye stranger, it's been nice, hope you find your paradise...goodbye Mary, goodbye Jane, will we ever meet again..." Song: "Lonesome Loser" The Little River Band. The dreaded/deleted locker room scene...just after Starbuck gets dissed by Athena... Or even blown off by Cassie later on... Key words: "Have you heard about the Lonesome Loser, beaten by the Queen of Hearts every time...have you heard about the Lonesome Loser he's a loser but he still keeps on trying...it's okay...he smiles and stares, tho this loneliness is driving him crazy. He don't know what goes on in his head, but if you watch very close you'll see it all." Sorry gang...it'll always be Starbuck's Theme to me... Onward to other things... Here's a few suggestions of my own: "Come Sail Away" -- Styx When Adama leads the devastated survivors away from the Twelve Colonies. Main line: "Come sail away, come sail away, come sail away with me..." "Free-For-All" -- Ted Nugent When mass numbers of Cylons obliterate either the Twelve Colonies or the Fleet of Battlestars at the Peace Conference. Main line: "It's a free-for-all and our hearts are in, you can bet your life; the stakes are high and so am I, it's in the air tonight." "Immigrant Song" -- Led Zeppelin When the rag-tag fleet closes on Ice Planet Zero. Main Line: "We come to the land of the ice and snow..." "Yellow Battlestar" -- Beatles (Original title "Yellow Submarine") Once all the survivors realize they're packed together into the one surviving Battlestar (in addition to a few ragtag ships). Main line: "We all live in a yellow Battlestar." (Yeah, I know it's weak, but it's humorous. ) "Silhouettes in Disguise" -- Kansas Whenever the squadrons of Vipers are fighting a battle out-numbered. Main line: "Hands too numb to feel, wrapped around the 'controls'; tonight they face the fact some are never coming back." and: "Engines never cool, trade their sins for fuel; that's what they're running on when they're blown to kingdom come." "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" -- Pat Benetar Any scene with ace Viper pilot Starbuck taking on Cylon Raiders. Main line: "Hit me with your best shot, fire away..." "Wrong" -- Lindsey Buckingham When Adama is debating with Sire Uri on the Council of Twelve. Main line: "The man's got it wrong... got it wrong... got it wrong..." "Urgent" -- Foreigner Sung by Apollo and Zac as they race towards the Peace Conference, thousands of Raiders tagging along. Main line: "Because it's urgent... so urgent..." Well, there's a few, at least... :) One might note that my selection of music is older than most of the stuff Liz chose. I hope that doesn't mean I'm old! :))) Mac Date: Wed, 13 Sep 1995 From: Eugenia Horne Subject: Re: Just to cause some trouble :) Liz wrote: (It's moments like these when I really like this list...) > What would happen if BSG was a rock musical? I'm not going to be a rock "purist" here because I know too many songs from musicals or operettas that I just like too much... Warning: Some lyrics would need to be slightly altered such as specific names, but the sentiment is the same. Also, I did most of the lyrics from memory so hopefully none are too far off. Vocal registers and gender of the original characters were sometimes not considered in parceling out the songs. Let's see, if we stick to "Saga" it should start out with some really snappy celebratory chorus about peace. Serina can be the lead soprano. - "Merano" (the opening number from "Chess") [Among the populace; Serina taking the lead...] ...seque to the warriors... - "Drinking Song" (from "The Student Prince") [It's almost mandatory to get a drinking song somewhere in a lot of musical productions.] ...okay, disaster hits...then the pathos begins... - "Alone and yet alive" ("Hot Mikado") [Serina, or Adama, or Apollo, or anyone else who has lost their beloved can sing this.] ...but, wait, Adama thinks of earth... - "Third Rock from the Sun" (?) [It's a country western song with a great title...] ...Adama gathers up the survivors and they all join in... - "To Dream the Impossible Dream" ("Man of La Mancha") ["To dream the impossible dream, to fight the unbeatable foe...to reach the unreachable star...This is my quest..."] [...oh, eek, there's no place where Baltar "confronts" Adama in Saga... oh, well...I'm re-writing it here...] Adama meets up with Baltar (ahead of schedule) in which Baltar mocks Adama... - "The Seven Deadly Virtues" ("Camelot") ["Take courage, now there's a sport, an invitation to the state of rigor-mort...I find humility means to be hurt. It's not the Earth the meek inherit; it's the dirt..."] OR...just by himself and utilizing the Cylons as the "backup chorus"... - "Be Prepared" ("Lion King") ["Be prepared for the chance of a lifetime. Be prepared for sensational news. A shining new era is tiptoeing nearer..."] To end rousingly...but with trepidation for the fate of Our Heroes. END ACT I...BEGINNING OF ACT II Back to Starbuck and Cassiopeia...for the required romantic duet...(of course at the opposite end of the stage Apollo and Serina could join in as a quartet.) - "Love has now united us" (Prince Albert) ["...Now may the bond which has tied itself around us, which has bound together two hearts closely together against the outside so that it will bravely face the raging storms at the sheer edge of the abyss..."] ...and what of the one left out in the cold?...Athena? - "Nobody's Side" ("Chess") ["Never use your heart, use your head..."] ...now after disaster, villainy, and romantic slush, it's required to "pick up the pace"...Sire Uri's party... - "Grisette's Song" ("The Merry Widow") [They're - uh - "socialators"] [..."We won't cheat you or mistreat you. We won't complicate your life. We know better than to greet you when we meet you with you wife..."] ...and of course complications with the Council...the next is to be sung by the Council in reference to Adama...hehehe... - "His Royal Highness" ("I and Albert") ["Memorandums from [Adama] arrive each hour, full of ideological parentheses, we most certainly don't need them, and, God knows, we never read them. I cast my votes exactly as I please..."] ...big battle on Carillon...they pick-up the pieces...those with partners re-unite... - "We do not heed your dismal sound" ("Hot Mikado") [Baltar can say the tag-lines of "You haven't heard the last of me yet" and " I'll get you back. "] Oh, dear, what a strange mish-mash...ranging from German Lieder to Operetta to "Ragtime" to Blues and Gospel... oh, well, if Andrew Lloyd Webber can get away with it... >> More suggestions folks! Let's make Saga the Rock Opera of Space Operas!<< Now that everyone nows that I've gone off the deep end... - Eugenia (And a skewed version of that HRH song is now running through my mind... Uri: "Have you ever tried to seduce Adama?" Tinya: "Seduce Adama? It would be like seducing Imperious Leader!" [Que music...] Uri: "Does he hunt or smoke or drink his fill of ambrosia?" Tinya: "Oh, no." Uri: "Like a well-born Caprican would do?" Tinya: "Good Heavens, no." Uri: "When he had a little leisure, would he grab a bit of pleasure? Would Adama appreciate a piece like you?") Date: Thu, 14 Sep 1995 From: Brun102670 Subject: Re: Saga of a Rock Opera? :) Here's a couple more: Baltar (under his breath to President Adar): "I Got Friends in Low Places" -- Garth Brooks "Go Away" -- Gloria Estafan Several: Athena to Starbuck in the locker room OR Adama to the Council of Twelve at any given moment OR Starbuck to any Cylon fighter he encounters OR The Imperious Leader to Baltar right before having him beheaded (sort of). Richard (yes I know they are lame, but so are most of the others.) Date: Fri, 15 Sep 1995 From: Robert F Hanczyk Subject: Re: Saga of a Rock Opera? :) Hi all. Here are some ideas coming to mind. BTW Mac, you're not old just becuase of your music selections. Look at some my starting picks. "Changes" - Yes - Athena to Starbuck "I'm moving through some changes./ I'll Never be the same. Something you did touched me./ There's no one else to blame. The love we had has fallen./ The love we used to share. We've given up pretending/ As if you didn't care." "I look into the mirror./ I see no happiness. [time for Athena to slap Starbuck] All the warmth I gave you/ Has turned to emptiness : You left me here believing/ In love that wasn't there." "Go" - Asia - Starbuck's theme "Dig for Victory/ Go fo Gold/ I don't want to Die/ Before I get Old" : "Turn a card and win/ But you may lose" Robert Date: Fri, 15 Sep 1995 From: Charles Norris Subject: Re: Just to cause some trouble :) Way to go Eugenia!! Had me rolling on the floor! Especially the Impossible Dream...MOLM is my FAVORITE musical of all time (I have the original Richard Kiley soundtrack)...I can just SEE Adama posing, arms outstretched, at the finale... "To reeeeeeeeeeeeeeech the unreeeeeeechable STAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR" Now, are we talking (Battle)star... or Star (of Kobol)...that's for the humorist to decide... But nice shot! Chuck Date: Fri, 15 Sep 1995 From: Letitia J. Yao Subject: Re: Just to cause some trouble :) Well, I have to jump in here and add some selections too. This is so fun! And how interesting to see other people's musical tastes! Athena re Starbuck: "I know him so well" from the musical "Chess" "looking back I could have played it differently won a few more moments, who can tell? but it took time to understand the man now at least i know i know him well Wasn't he good? Wasn't he fine? Isn't it madness? He won't be mine. But in the end he needs a little bit more than me, more security; he needs his fantasy and freedom. I know him so well" or alternatively: "Much at All" by Susan Werner "I guess I dont' miss you much at all" Apollo re Serina "Ghost" by Indigo Girls "THere's not enough room in this world for my pain Signals crossed and love gets lost and time passed makes it plain of all my demon spirits, I need you the most I'm in the love with your ghost" (this song also includes the line: "you kiss me like a lover and you sting me like a viper") Starbuck "I am a Rock" by Simon and Garfunkel "I have no need of friendship friendship causes pain It's laughter and it's loving I distain I am a rock; I am an island And a rock feels no pain; and an island never cries" That's all (for now). :) --------------------------- Letitia J.
