BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: THE NEXT GENERATION The surviving MAIN characters are IMMORTAL!!! They cannot be killed, but they CAN be temporarily disabled/comatose, if you get my meaning. Crossovers are permitted, but BE CAREFUL!!! Remember that the Galactica cannot ever find Earth so that we can keep adding stories. Also, this takes place 17 yahrens after the original BG series, and of course, ignoring BG80. E-mail me at jchin01@kepler.poly.edu Well, Here we go... #15 There are those who believe that life here began out there, far across the universe, with tribes of humans who may have been the forefathers of the Egyptians, or the Toltecs, or the Mayans. That they may have been the architects of the great pyramids, or the lost civilizations of Lemuria or Atlantis. Some believe that there may yet be brothers of man who even now fight to survive, somewhere beyond the heavens. BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: THE NEXT GENERATION THE SIX MILLION CUBIT SIRESS Written by Joe Chin Based on Battlestar Galactica Created by Glen A. Larson #15 "You're clear to launch, Commander and Colonel," said Rigel's voice into Commander Apollo's and Colonel Starbuck's helmetcom. "Thank you, Rigel," responded Apollo's voice. With that, the pair of vipers launched from the Galactica's launch bay into space. "Just like old times, ol' bud," commented Starbuck. "Yeah, except ever since my father has terminated, we don't get out tofight together very much." "And this experimental viper brings back memories of when we first installed CORA Generation Alpha into one of the vipers." "Our pilots now call it 'First Generation CORA,' Starbuck," correctedApollo. The pair of vipers headed towards a green basestar, designated the Adama. They approached one of the landing bays. "Commander Apollo and Colonel Starbuck requesting landing clearance." "Clearance granted, Commander, and welcome to the Adama." The two vipers came to a full stop as a pair of mobile staircases were being wheeled towards the whining vipers. The whines died down slowly as their engines shut down. Colonel Sheba awaited, along with Toria, Tannia, and another young woman viper pilot. As soon as the mobile staircases were next to the vipers, the twolanding bay crewmen ran up the steps as the cockpits opened. Apollo andStarbuck handed their helmets to the crewmen, thanking them forrelieving them of their helmets. they resumed talking. "You mean that Ensign Iris paid for all the research into this new viper?" asked Starbuck. "Ensign Isis," corrected Apollo. "Siress Iris was her mother. And yes, she was the one who splatted up the cubits for the research from money inherited from her grandfather, Sire Uri." "I didn't know that Sire Uri had children," remarked Starbuck. "No one knew that Isis survived," explained Apollo. "She was the oldest of three, but while she was in a life center getting her leg healed after a triad accident, but her mother and father, grandmother, and two younger brothers were apparently killed in the Cylon bombing. Sire Uri and she were the only two survivors, until Uri had died about two yahrens after fleeing The Colonies. When he died, all he left her was alone, with an inheritance of a battlestar full of cubits from its lowest decks to its astrodomes. All she wanted to do was be a Colonial warrior, something that her entire family did not really care much for, but since she had no family left to stop her, she graduated along with Toria and Tannia." "And Saul, Buck, Diana, Charles-" The two of them suddenly went silent when they realized that they were not alone. The duo approached The four ladies. "Commander Apollo and Colonel Starbuck," greeted the fourth pilot. "Came to see me off in the experimental viper?" "Yes, Siress Isis," responded Starbuck. Toria and Tannia turned to Isis in surprise. "It's 'ENSIGN Isis,' Colonel. Please." she responded. "Apollo, such an important person like this should not go out there in that test viper," said Starbuck. "Hey, it was MY funding that made it possible," retorted Isis. "I had funded for all the research because I understand the problems of finding fuel." "Calm down, Ensign," said Sheba. She said to Starbuck, "She's a member of Silver Spar Squadron and has volunteered for this." "More like, demanded it," said Toria. "But- Tannia and I will launch with her as escorts, and make sure that she and the viper make it back intact." "I'm just worried about the viper exploding out there," said Starbuck. "There would be nothing to bring back ." "Colonel, it's just a routine recon mission, nothing more," explained Isis. "And if that happened, the research team and the team that did the installations of the extra stuff in my viper will not get a cubit for their efforts. We just need to wait until the fleet gets close enough to that star we'll be passing. We launch, take some sensor readings as the fuel cells charge up from the star's energy, and return. Nothing more." "Getting close to that star is what we're worried about, Ensign," said Apollo. "Well, we have a few centares before we are close enough to that star to launch," said Sheba. "And the Officer's Club is complete if you want to wait there." "Sure, Sheba," said Apollo. "Ensign Isis deserves at least a drink for volunteering." "And Captain Boomer can enjoy himself as commander of the Galactica," said Starbuck. Boomer was on the command center beside Jolly on the Galactica. Omega was at his station there. "You don't look too happy, Boomer," commented Jolly. "Just thinking back to when we first tested out CORA," commented Boomer. "We had to put out a big bribe with help from the Rising Star to get a volunteer. Only this time, this Ensign Isis of Silver Spar Squadron kept on us until she got the job of FLYING this experimental viper." "Yeah, I've taken messages from her for Apollo, too," said Jolly. "Who does this Ensign think she is?" "Sire Uri's granddaughter," answered Aa from the bridge area. "She also funded the cubits for this research and advancement from her inheritance from her grandfather." "So, it's not who she THINKS she is, Jolly," said Boomer. "It's who she ACTUALLY is." "It's also funny that we did not know this," said Jolly, looking at Aa. "Only Apollo, Tigh, and I knew," said Aa. "And maybe Sheba. She did not want people to know who she was because she did not want special treatment." "I know that she was a very demanding cadet," said Boomer. "She made things hard for Sheba, Starbuck, Bojay and myself until she got things right." "Well, how long will Starbuck and Apollo be on the Adama?" asked Jolly. "Until she returns from the recon patrol to test out the experimental viper," said Boomer. In space, the battlestar Galactica was followed by the green basestar Adama, and the two large ships were followed by the assorted ships of the fleet. Up ahead of the fleet, this yellow star grew and grew very slowly as they approached it. Back to the front of the moving fleet, the green basestar picked up speed, and moved ahead of the Galactica, moving closer to the bright yellow star. Three vipers headed towards the bright star. "Fuel cells charging," said Isis as the trio headed towards the star. "Don't get too close," warned Toria. "My readings say that this star is beginning to go unstable." "Mine, too," said Tannia. "GET AWAY FROM HERE!" yelled Isis. "A FLAIR IS ERUPTING!" The three vipers simultaneously turned, with Isis's viper trailing. A solar flair erupted from the star, just missing her viper. Her C.O.R.A. unit kicked in, and accelerated her viper, which shot past between Toria and Tannia. "Isis, you all right?" asked Toria. "I believe so, Toria. That flair made my fuel cells instantaneously register to full. CORA kicked in and saved me from that flare." "Well, we got what we came for," said Toria. "Let's return." In front of them was the landing bay to the Adama. That was when Isis realized that she had problems. "It seems that the flair has fused most of our systems," recited C.O.R.A. "Can't we slow down?" asked Isis. "Negative, Isis," responded C.O.R.A. "I heard that," said Toria. "Let's see if we can slow her down." Her viper fired off its turbos to try and get ahead of Isis. Tannia immediately followed suit beside Toria. "She's going in too fast," exclaimed Tannia. "Try tow lines," said Toria. "At the same time." Synchronously, the two vipers approached the runaway fighter plane. "Tow lines..." started Toria. The two vipers were close to the third one. "Now." "Mmmfff!" said one of them. "My tow lines snapped," said Tannia. "Mine too, but she did slow down a bit." "Can't we get more vipers out here to help her?" "It would be too late." "Why don't we try that maneuver that Boxey did when your viper was out of control at the Olympus battle?" "She's going too fast," explained Toria. "We're good but not THAT good. Besides, it would only kill her, and one or both of us," Toria said glumly. "It just so happens that Isis is heading straight for a landing bay on the Adama," pointed out Tannia. "Don't worry about me," said Isis. "Hey, I'm in command here," said Toria. On the control center of the basestar, Maga happened to be there beside Apollo. Sheba stood on the other side of Apollo, and Starbuck was standing on the other side of Sheba. "Isis is coming in like a missile," exclaimed Bojay. "Full reverse, flank speed!" ordered Maga. "Execute!" Everyone looked back and forth at Sheba, Starbuck, Apollo and Maga. "Do it," said Apollo. "I think I understand what he has planned." "What in Hades are they doing?" asked Tannia as they watched Isis approaching the basestar at high speed and the basestar backing away. "I think I know," said Toria. "Trying to avoid Isis?" "No, moving away so that her viper can go into the landing bay at a slower speed with respect to the Adama." "I think that I'll kiss whoever thought of that one," said Tannia. They were both unaware that Maga was aboard the Adama. The basestar moved back away from the high speed viper in an attempt to give the viper a chance to slow down. It did not help much. Instead, the top wing of the viper caught on the edge of the landing bay, and after scraping the ceiling, bounced onto the deck onto its landing struts sideways. The landing struts snapped underneath the viper, and the craft itself turned sideways, and rolled across the landing bay, until it hit the wall at the end. Toria and Tannia jumped out of their vipers in another area of the landing bay, and went running. Landing bay crew that were bringing mobile staircases to the vipers stopped in their tracks. Toria almost ran into the one that was meant for her viper, but managed to dodge it. "Stand back," said one of the other landing bay crewmen as they stopped them from moving any further. "That viper may explode at any centon." Other crew and medtechs were rushing to get Isis out of her viper. In the Life Center, Isis was alive and fully awake, but was covered with a blanket from the neck down. One side of her head was bandaged up, covering half of her face. "I hurt all over," she was telling Toria and Tannia. "Even my hair hurts!" Toria and Tannia giggled a bit at that. "And I can only see out of one eye," she said, sadly surprised. "I have also learned that I have only one eye, and one good, working ear." Joycelyn took a quick reading off one of the scanners. "Doctor," said Isis, turning to face Joycelyn, "I don't need to be restrained. I hurt too much to try to go anywhere." "Isis," said Joycelyn. "You do not have the means to go anywhere." "All I ever wanted to do was to be a Colonial warrior," cried Isis. "I've got lots of cubits. Please, Doctor Joycelyn," she begged. "Fix me up so I can be a Colonial warrior again. I don't care about my cubits. Please. I'll make you very wealthy." "Isis, all of the cubits on the fleet cannot fix you," she said sympathetically. "We just don't have the know how or the technology." "Get Doctor Cassiopeia from the Galactica," she insisted. "I'll still pay you and her generously if it can be done. I mean, you DO have the technology. We just need to learn how to use it. I mean, I am the granddaughter of the late Sire Uri, and I have inherited all of the cubits that he had earned during his lifetime." Diana was nearby, alongside with Kritter, Boxey, Saul, and several other young Colonial warriors. They all looked on helplessly as Isis continued her babbling. Boxey wiped his face with his sleeve. They were all also surprised by what Isis said. "Diana, can I talk to you?" asked Kritter. "I have an idea." "I don't think that it will work, Kritter," said Diana pessimistically to Kritter in a small room. Boxey, Toria and Tannia were present as well. "Well, please talk to Doctors Joycelyn and Cassiopeia and see what THEY have to say," barked Kritter. "Kritter, I'm NOT saying that it won't," defended Diana. "I do like your idea, and I WILL talk to Doctors Joycelyn and Cassiopeia, but I think that I already know the answer that they will give me. I mean, I want to help her as much as you do. After all, we ALL went from cadets to Colonial warriors together." "I understand," said Kritter. "It won't work," said Joycelyn to Diana and Kritter. "I mean, we have NEVER done anything like this before. For all we know, we may end up killing her instead of helping her." "Well, we can MAKE it work," said Kritter. "If we work together, I think that it IS a great possibility. Why don't we at least, tell Isis that we have a possible solution? there IS a chance that you can get some cubits to overflow your pouches. I mean, as Isis said, we DO have the technology, and all we have to do is learn how to use it. And I think that we can do it." "I'll talk to Doctor Cassiopeia first," responded Joycelyn. "But I don't want her cubits. I just want to help her, just as much as you all do." "That's all that we can ask, Joycelyn." "Ensign Kritter has a very fascinating idea, Joycelyn, but this is not up to me," said Cassiopeia to Joycelyn over the comline between the Adama and the Galactica. "I must first talk to Commander Apollo." "I hope that he approves," said Joycelyn. "Well, if he does not, send me a recording of Isis begging for this procedure to be done, and maybe that will convince him." "She does not know about the proposal yet, Cass. We wanted to get approval from you and whoever we need to get approval from before we brought the idea to her." "Huh?" was Apollo's surprised response to Cassiopeia. They were in the Galactica Life Center. "Apollo, Ensign Kritter and Diana think that they may have something to help Ensign Isis," explained Cassiopeia. "Kritter proposed building her mechanical arms and legs for her. And it would be up to me and Doctor Joycelyn to get it to work for Ensign Isis. Some of the technology for this is from the two Cylons that Doctor Wilker had dismantled in his lab almost twenty yahrens ago." "But-" "And I think that we can connect her system, flesh, and bone to the mechanical arms and legs." "But she ended up with a piece of transparent tylinium in her eye and another piece of her helmet in her ear. She still cannot be a Colonial warrior with just one eye and one good ear." "Kritter says that using technology based on the Galactica's sensors, he can fix that, too." Apollo pondered. "She actually tried to dump piles of cubits on Doctor Joycelyn and myself to get us to do what we can to help her continue to be a Colonial warrior. I didn't know that she was so wealthy." "She originally did not want anyone to know, Cassie." Apollo continued his pondering. "But I guess that she wants to resume her duties so badly that she does not care who knows about her inherited status. I don't know, Cass." "Hey, you two, what's all this about?" Starbuck suddenly walked in. "Talking about me behind my back?" Apollo looked back at Starbuck, half annoyed and half amused by his question. "Just talking, Starbuck," said Cassiopeia. "Fleet business. I cannot talk about it because it has to do with a patient, and I needed the commander's advice." "This is something that I am afraid is not my decision to make, Doctor," Apollo said to Cassiopeia. "I going to have to discuss it with President Pro-tem Gaylin." "Apollo, let me consult with Tinnia," said Gaylin. "After all, when we found that Isis had survived, she and Uri, before he died, were her mother and father pro-tem. after Uri died, she took care of Isis by herself. In the meantime, come over to the Rising Star. And if anyone asks why you are coming over, tell them to visit an old friend. You'll still be telling the truth." "All right, Gaylin." "If we can get that kind of technology to work, we can help so many people who have lost hands and feet, or arms and legs," said Siress Tinnia to Apollo and Gaylin. "And knowing how strong a Cylon is, she may even be better than before. And she actually wants to splat the cubits for this research?" "That is what our chief Life Station officers told me," said Apollo. "But we have not proposed the idea to her yet." "Well, talk to Isis about it, and if she wants it, it is all right with me if it is all right with you two." "I would say let's do it," said Gaylin. "But do not tell anyone. And make sure that those involved do not tell anyone. This is our secret, Commander." "We don't need people needlessly losing arms and legs just so they can get these artificial arms and legs that would probably be stronger and better than their own," Tinnia warned, agreeing with Gaylin. "And when Isis goes through therapy, she would probably be great for missions that need her enhanced abilities," pondered Apollo. "Good thinking, Apollo," said Gaylin. "I hope that Cassiopeia is right about being able to get Isis going good and new." "I am under orders as a Life Station officer not to say," Cassiopeia said to Starbuck. They were in the Officer's Club. "It has to do with Ensign Isis," predicted Starbuck. She was saved by Apollo. "Cassiopeia, Starbuck, We need to get a shuttle ready to launch for the Adama." "All right, ol Buddy, can you tell me what in Hades is going on?" "Wait until we are on the shuttle, Starbuck. You are my copilot." "Yes!" declared Isis, lying on the Life Center bed. "Siress Tinnia has control over my cubits that I inherited from my grandfather. I will need to contact her to tell her that I want to pay for whatever you need to do." "Well, we don't want extra cubits in our pouches, Isis," said Cassiopeia. "If it works, you may have helped many future Colonial warriors who very much want to continue their duties as badly as you do. But first, we need one team that Apollo is meeting with to build the mechanical parts. And there will be therapy if the operations are successful, which Diana will be in charge of." Isis's face seemed pleased with that selection. "It will be a long process," continued Cassiopeia, "but it will also be Diana's first time taking care of someone's rehabilitation." "You will be in charge of her physical therapy," explained Joycelyn to Diana. "Even if this is your first time in a major assignment like this, there is no one more qualified than you, since you graduated with her, and you know her better than any of us in the Life Center. But before that, you will assist Doctor Cassiopeia and myself in the Life Center, and the crew assigned to building the mechanical arms and legs for Ensign Isis." "I'd be glad to help in any way I can," said Diana. "After all, Isis is a good friend of mine, just as much as Toria and Tannia and Boxey and Kritter." "And remember, you are not to discuss or even mention this to ANYONE, except Cassiopeia, Isis, Commander Apollo, Ensigns Kritter and Toria and Tannia, or myself. But first, it is up to Commander Apollo and Ensign Kritter." "Ensign Kritter," said Apollo. "You seem to know what you are doing. I am assigning Toria and Tannia and Boxey to assist, and since Boxey is the ranking warrior, I am leaving him in charge." Kritter looked at Boxey, and nodded his approval to him. They were assembled in Sheba's quarters, with Starbuck standing and leaning back on the pedestal of the Cylon commander's throne. Sheba was standing beside Apollo. "And I understand that you will also be getting help from Diana?" asked Apollo. "Apollo, I think that you should really be talking while sitting up there?" said Starbuck with a half a smile, looking up at the throne on top of the pedestal that has been unused since the capture of the basestar. Apollo gave Starbuck a half a grin, and everyone else laughed. "The three of you worked well as a team when redesigning and rebuilding the computers and control systems for the Olympus sectares ago," pointed out Apollo. "Starbuck and I will come by to check up on you, and render any assistance to you if needed." Sheba took over. "As for quarters, Boxey," she turned to Toria. "Toria, can you share your quarters with Boxey?" "Did we get sealed?" responded Toria with half a smile. "We'll also share the bed." Apollo looked directly at Starbuck as everyone laughed. "All right, let's get to work," said Apollo. "You don't intend to put THAT on Isis, Kritter, do you?" asked Boxey. Kritter was poking around in the upper arm of a Cylon Centurion with a probing device. The hand on the piece of Centurion opened and closed, but did not close into a complete fist. "Uh, no," responded Kritter. "I'm just using this as a model to build from." He looked at Boxey with half a smile. "This thing is too fat. And Isis is a thin person. The hand is a very complicated configuration. And I want it to work just like a real one, if not better." Sheba walked in. "That's not what you are going to put on Isis, is it?" she asked. "No," chimed Boxey and Kritter in perfect harmony. "And where is Toria and Tannia? They are supposed to be working with you on this." "At the Life Station," answered Boxey. An image of a hand opening and closing was on a screen at the Life Station. Toria and Tannia were standing behind Diana, staring at it, and Diana was tapping away at the input device in front of her. Sheba walked in. "Hey, Toria," she said. "Commander?" responded Toria as the three of them turned around. "Just came to see how you are doing," said Sheba. "We're working on it, Sheba," said Toria enthusiastically. She went over to the other side of the room, saying, "Take a look at what we've got, Sheba." Toria showed Sheba what looked like skeletal structures of two arms and legs, but without hands and feet. "Solid tylinium," said Toria excitedly. "She's just proud and excited about our work, Commander," said Diana. Sheba could not help but smile. "Well, you seem to be doing well," she said. "Keep up the good work." "Thank you, Sheba." Bojay and Valka were inspecting pieces of the demolished viper. Bojay managed to get this box out of what was left of the cockpit, but he looked like he was sick. "Captain, you look like you've eaten rations that sat around for a yahren," Valka said to him. "I'll be fine, Valka," responded Bojay. "Go to Doctor Joycelyn, Captain," said Valka. "I can continue." "We've got what we needed for now, Valka," said Bojay as he handed Valka the black box. "This is C.O.R.A. from the viper." "Thank you, Captain." She took the box from Bojay. "I know what to do with it, Captain. Go to the Life Station so I don't have to carry you there when you pass out." On the Galactica, Mojo and Valka were working with Boomer and Omega in one of the laboratories. The black box that Bojay pulled out of Isis's demolished viper was connected via a cable to other equipment on the table in the corner. "Well, Isis's experiment was a success, except for that flair that shot out from the star," said Omega. "But a warrior ended up paying a high price to find this out for us," said Boomer. "Isis paid honorably," said Valka. Both, Boomer and Omega looked at her with disgust. "Hey, she's not dead yet," exclaimed Boomer as he got out of his seat. "Don't -" Mojo got in between Boomer and Valka. "Hey, fighting about it will not get any work done." Valka and Boomer calmed down. "Come with me, Valka," said Mojo. "I will speak with you." Valka followed Mojo out of the room. Isis was in Doctor Wilker's unused turbo-wheelchair. She had a turban over her head, covering the top and side of her head, and an eyepatch over one eye. With the one eye, she was watching Kritter, Toria, Tannia and Boxey working away. Tannia was poking at the skeletal wrist of the arm that she built as Toria stood there, holding a skeletal framework of a hand. The part of the arm that would connect to a shoulder was connected by tiny wires to a computer terminal. Tannia moved aside and Toria placed the wrist of the skeletal hand to the wrist of the arm. Kritter typed in several sequences on the keyboard, and they watched the arm. The arm waved as if trying to flag someone or something. While up in mid-air, the hand closed to a fist, opened up again, and opened up again. The hand turned and closed into a sideways fist. The thumb popped up, signaling 'thumbs up.' The hand moved up and down, emphasizing 'thumbs up.' "Also, using sensor technology, there will be tiny sensors so that you can feel things, such as the softness of a daggit's fur, or the feel of a laser pistol in your hand," explained Kritter. "It will be up to Doctors Cassiopeia and Joycelyn to connect them to your sensory system. However, we will also install dampers so that pain will not be so painful." "I'd shake your hands for a job well done, but one problem," said Isis. They all looked at her, knowing that she was going to come out with some kind of a punchline. "What is that, Isis?" asked Toria. Gleefully, Isis answered, "I still don't have a hand to shake yours with!" She giggled. They laughed. "Don't worry, Isis," said Toria. "You will, soon." "I know," said Isis. "And thank you all for all your help. Now, let's get to the Officer's Club. I'll race you all." Everyone went running. Isis said, "Forward, CORA." The turbo-wheelchair moved behind the four running Colonial warriors, caught up and zoomed ahead of them. "Hey, Isis, no fair!" yelled Kritter as everyone laughed. And the fleet moved on. Isis was unconscious on a table, as Cassiopeia, Joycelyn, and Diana, their faces covered in surgical wear, worked on her. "I hope that it works," murmured Diana under her breath, watching the strange images on the screen that Cassiopeia was staring intensively as her hands manipulated the equipment in front of her. Sheba's Journal. I hope it works. Doctor Cassiopeia has been here from the Galactica, working along with Doctor Joycelyn with very delicate surgery that has never been performed before. Ensigns Kritter, Toria and Tannia, and Sergeant Boxey from the Galactica, have worked intently, and are as nervous as I am about this. Commander Apollo and Colonel Starbuck are just as nervous, and Siress Tinnia and President Gaylin give us their well wishes. However, Isis has regained her good spirits that she has been known for since I first met her as a cadet. She has spent almost two million cubits so far on all this. And by the time she gets through this phase of the research, she will hopefully have one arm to use. Isis was fully conscious and sitting in the turbo-wheelchair. She was waving one hand around, trying it out. Diana and Cassiopeia were also in the room with her. Isis looked carefully at her arm and hand. "It looks and feels like my REAL hand," said Isis enthusiastically. On the table next to Isis was a can. She reached out to it, picked it up, and took a drink from it. "Feels GREAT to be able to drink by myself again," said Isis. Cassiopeia and Diana smiled. "But it feels heavier than the arm I was born with," said Isis. "That may take getting used to," said Diana. "But keep in mind that you are now stronger than you think." Isis tested it out after she emptied the rest of the contents of the can into herself in one big swallow. She gave the can a squeeze, and crushed it. She twirled the crushed can in her hand and kept on crushing it again and again, until it was a ball of crushed tylinium. "Wow," she said. "I can compact my own garbage now." Everyone else was just as amazed, too amazed to laugh. "Even Mojo could not do that so easily," commented Boxey. "Commander Apollo," addressed Mojo in the Officer's Club. Apollo was sitting with Mojo. "Yes, Ensign Mojo?" "What is Box doing? As his wingmate, I should be there with him." "I am not allowed to say, Mojo," explained Apollo. "I am under orders from President Gaylin and Siress Tinnia. He is doing some work for them." Apollo felt uncomfortable. It was true that he was working for them. Finally he found the right words. "As a Colonial warrior, I am under orders not to say what is going on from Siress Tinnia and President Gaylin. That is all a Colonial warrior needs to know." Mojo seemed to buy his last comment. Kritter, Boxey, Tannia and Toria were busy working on another arm, and two legs. One of the feet was still uncovered, its tylinium skeletal structure showing. Toria and Tannia were covering it up to make it look more humanlike. Boxey and Kritter watched. "Well, let's get these to Doctor Cassiopeia and Joycelyn," said Toria. Isis was unconscious on a table, as Cassiopeia, Joycelyn, and Diana, their faces covered in surgical wear, worked on her. Cassiopeia did her work on the upper part of Isis's body, and Joycelyn worked on the lower part. "All done here," said Cassiopeia. She walked around Isis's peaceful looking head and started helping Joycelyn out. Apollo's Journal Starbuck and I have never flown our vipers so much before until these last few cycles. Heading to the Adama to check on Boxey's and Kritter's progress with Isis, to the Rising Star to discuss our progress with Siress Tinnia and Gaylin, and sometimes, getting parts for the teams. While I am proud of the teams for a job well done, it does bother me, probably because of the Cylon anatomy that was being used for this. Isis is back on her feet again, but according to Doctor Cassiopeia and Sergeant Boxey, they are now working on the hardest part of making Ensign Isis a fully qualified Colonial warrior again. In the laboratory, Kritter was sitting behind a screen, looking at the image of Starbuck staring back at him. The image of Starbuck's face moved closer, and his eye filled the screen. Kritter backed away from the screen apprehensively. Starbuck was in there with Boxey, Toria, and Tannia, and Kritter inspecting an eyeball. "This is taken from sensor technology from the Galactica's sensors and targeting turrets," Boxey explained. "Does that mean that she can hear from it as well?" asked Starbuck. "No," said Boxey, "But-" Boxey signaled to another setup on the other side of the lab. "That will be her new hearing sensor." The screen there had a green thin line going across it. "That certainly does NOT look like an ear," Starbuck said to Boxey as they approached it. As Boxey said, "That is what is going INSIDE her ear, Colonel," the line across the screen wavered into waveforms. "Ah," said Starbuck, causing the line to turn into a quick waveform, and back into a steady straight line again. "They are ready, but Doctor Cassiopeia said that she wants Isis to recover and adjust to her new arms and legs first." Isis carefully walked across the room as Cassiopeia, Joycelyn and Diana watched. "These legs are Heh- Vee," groaned Isis. "They're made of solid tylinium," responded Diana, "Covered with special material to make them look like your real legs." "And they're beautiful!" she said, inspecting herself. "I can probably have every guy running after me with these legs." "And you can certainly outrun them," said Cassiopeia. "Once you get used to them," finished Joycelyn. Isis was grinning from her exposed ear to her covered ear. "And once you are fully recovered from the intense surgery," said Cassiopeia, "We've got a new eye and new hearing implants for you. That will be the most difficult of all." "And according to Chief Life Station Officer Cassiopeia," Apollo was telling Siress Tinnia and President Pro-tem Gaylin, "the last part of this will be the most difficult of all." "Well, Commander," said Tinnia, "I would pin medals all over those who worked hard to accomplish all this, but we do have to keep this secret." "I understand, Siress," said Apollo. "I would like to meet Isis, and see how she is doing." "Right now is a bad time, Siress. She is undergoing the installation of her eye and ear." "Installation!" said Tinnia a bit offensively. "You talk like Ensign Isis is just a piece of equipment." "Forgive my choice of words, Siress," said Apollo. "You know that as my father did, I care about ALL Colonial warriors under my command. And that includes those aboard the Adama as well." "Well, take me to the Adama, and we will wait for her." "Sure, Siress," said Apollo. With that, Gaylin and Tinnia followed Apollo. A shuttle headed for the landing bay of the green basestar. In the shuttle bay, Sheba awaited with Bojay as Siress Tinnia walked out of the shuttle and down the stairs of the mobile staircase beside the shuttle. "Welcome to the Adama," said Sheba. "Thank you, Sheba. How is she?" asked Tinnia. "She's in surgery right now, but-" Sheba trailed off. "I can take you to the Life Center." "Thank you, Colonel," said Tinnia. Apollo and Gaylin followed Tinnia, Sheba and Bojay out of the landing bay. Sheba, Apollo, Starbuck, and Bojay awaited along with Tinnia and Gaylin in the waiting room by the Life Center. Cassiopeia walked in, saying, "We have just finished surgery, Commander," to Apollo. "We just need Ensign Isis to regain consciousness and recover." "How is she?" asked Tinnia. "She will be fine, Siress," said Cassiopeia. "She will be awake in a centar if you want to talk to her. But she may be in pain, but we can take care of that." "Thank you, Doctor," said Tinnia. "My whole head hurts," said Isis, "But if that's what I must pay to actually be able to see and hear fully again, -" She trailed off. She stuck her finger into her good ear to try out the implant, and listened carefully. "She did not want to be a politician," she heard Siress Tinnia's voice saying in the waiting room next door. "She wanted to be a Colonial warrior." "Tinnia is here," said Isis. "How do you know?" asked Diana, who was unaware of Tinnia's presence. "Because I heard her." With that, she stood up, and it seemed as if the room tipped on her. "You all right?" asked Diana. Joycelyn came running over as well. "For a micron there, it felt like that the room tried to turn over onto its side," said Isis. "Your ears are also used to help you keep your balance, Isis," pointed out Joycelyn. "You just have to get used to your new ear." "I understand," said Isis. "I'm going to get Doctor Cassiopeia," said Diana. With that, she walked out. Isis walked into the waiting room where everyone was waiting for her. Following her was Joycelyn, Diana, Boxey and Toria, Tannia and Kritter. "How are you doing, Isis?" asked Tinnia. "I seem to be all right, Tinnia," said Isis. "I can see out of two eyes now, and I can walk and run again, and..." She paused for emphasis. "I am now much heavier than Captain Jolly the Galactica's Red Squadron." Tinnia rolled her eyes a bit, but smiled slightly, and everyone else laughed. "Her arms and legs are made of solid tylinium," said Kritter. "But after she gets used to everything, she'll be stronger, better, and faster." "I surely hope so," said Tinnia. "It costed her almost six million cubits for all this." "But-" cut in Gaylin. "Since you're all here, remember that this is not to be talked about with ANYONE outside of this room. I'm just thankful that the landing bay officers did not see what the medtechs pulled out of that viper that she turned into scrap tylinium." "We'd give you all medals for a job well done, but because of the need for secrecy, we cannot," explained Tinnia. "But- the part of that six million that did not get spent on the expenses are to go to each one of you." With that, Tinnia handed Isis a package. Isis opened the package, and handed out small card-like thingies to Boxey, Diana, Kritter, Cassiopeia, Toria, Tannia, Joycelyn, Apollo and Sheba. Boxey looked at his, and it looked as if his eyeballs were going to shoot out of their sockets like a pair of laser torpedoes. Isis spoke. "I would have had the cubits brought over, but it would have been too much even for ME to carry. Oh, by the way, I have also learned that the experimental viper was a success. The fuel cells charged up nicely, but the flair that bursted out of that star fused the viper's systems." And the fleet moved on. Isis sat with a headset on her head. "I hear it," said Isis into the mouthpiece. On the other side of the wall of equipment, Diana was sitting with her own headset, working. Doctors Joycelyn and Cassiopeia were standing behind her, just observing. "Take a look at the screen with that eyepatch covering the eye that you were born with, please?" said Diana. Diana put on the eyepatch, covering the eye that she was born with. The screen activated, completely white, with a black dot in the middle. "That looks like the front of a Cylon fighter," said Isis. The black dot blinked out, and came back on. "I see the side of a viper." Back on the other side, Diana took off her headset, and went around to the other side. "Gee, Isis, you've got a good eye." Isis smiled. Toria and Tannia walked in, with Boxey following. "And a good ear, too," she gleefully continued. "It seems that you're in great shape." "Yeah," responded Isis. "Fit and trim, but twice as heavy as Captain Jolly." "But you can outrun him if he ran after you," said Toria. The four ladies giggled. "How is she actually doing?" asked Boxey. "She seems to be doing very well," said Diana. She went to the equipment, and some fast music with a heavy beat came on. "Watch Isis," she said. They watched as Isis danced around the room. Suddenly, the next piece of music played, with an even faster beat, and Isis was really on the move. She jumped up and landed on her feet, squatting down, and tossed her feet out sideways doing a split while landing on her hands, and used her hands to push herself back up and landed on her feet. She repeated the move three more times. Toria put her hand to her open mouth, surprised at the split that Isis did. Boxey watched Isis in fascination, and shock was evident on Tannia's face. Isis jumped up again, and pushed herself back down using her hands on the high ceiling as leverage. Boxey, Toria, and Tannia watched Isis go up, straining their necks as they looked up. When Diana looked at Boxey's, Toria's and Tannia's reaction, all she saw were the bottoms of their chins and the darkness inside their nostrils. Finally, Isis landed on her feet, squatting to alleviate her landing. "I think she's ready for active duty," said Diana, "But because I am only a med-tech, it is not up to me." "I think she's ready, too," said Joycelyn. "But, wait until the next cycle, because it is getting late." "Aawwww..." chimed all of the Colonial warriors in harmony. Isis yawned, which caused Tannia to yawn. "She's right," said Tannia. "Ho hum." "Yes," acknowledged Isis. Boxey sat on one side of the bed with his hair mussed up. All that he was wearing was a pair of shorts. Toria sat on the other side, running her fingers through her disarrayed hair. Toria was wearing what resembled a G-suit that showed her shape. "I had trouble sleeping," said Toria. "So did I." "Well, this cycle, we determine Isis's flying capabilities." "I know, Toria. Let's go." "Like this?!" asked Toria modeling herself to him. "And you don't intend to go like that?" She pointed to what Boxey was wearing. "Do you? I know I don't. And I don't think that our commanders would be pleased about that either." "Uh, no, but it is ashamed to cover yourself up." Toria tapped his cheek lightly with her fist, saying, "You're as bad as Starbuck used to be before he got sealed to Cassiopeia." They laughed as they climbed into their uniforms. Isis was up and wandering the corridors. She stopped at a door and pressed the button beside it. "Be right out!" Isis heard the faint voice from the other side. The door opened, and Tannia came out. "Hello, Tannia," said Isis. "Should we go get Boxey and Toria?" "OK." With that, they started walking down the corridor. The six of them walked into the landing bay, with Boxey leading. He led them to a shuttle. "You mean, that we're not taking our vipers?" asked Isis. "We can get to the Galactica faster if we do." "No, we're all going in this one shuttle," responded Boxey. "It would save on fuel, fuel that we don't know how long will last which led to the experiment that pulverized the pogees out of your viper and left you in several pieces." "But-" "But it led to your Kritteronics," said Boxey. Kritter's face looked as if his head was starting to get larger. "But at what cost?" Boxey went into lecture mode. "It costed six million cubits, and perhaps more. And it almost costed you your life, and your career as a Colonial warrior." "Boxey is right, you know," said another woman's voice. Heads turned to see Sheba approaching them. "But it did work out for the better for me, Sergeant." "But you could have been killed," explained Sheba. "That flair could have destroyed your viper. Or you could have been killed in the landing bay. Now, let's get to the Galactica so that you can try out the simulation." "Are you coming too, Colonel?" asked Boxey. "Yes, I am. Now are we going to stand here and talk or get to the Galactica?" In the shuttle, Boxey, Toria, Tannia and Isis were gathered in the front. Boxey tried to sit in the pilot's seat as Isis tried doing the same. "Isis, I'll pilot the shuttle," said Boxey. "Depending on how you do, if you really want to, you can pilot the shuttle back." "But I am one of the best pilots," argued Isis. "So am I. But you haven't piloted anything for several sectares. You still have to get used to your new arms and legs." "But you said it yourself, Sergeant," argued Isis. "You never really lose your touch." Boxey looked at Isis, and turned to Toria in the copilot's seat. "Toria, you don't mind if Isis copilots, do you?" "It's all right with me," she said. "Shouldn't you be asking ME?" asked Sheba with half a smile. "After all, I AM the ranking Colonial warrior here." Boxey looked sheepishly back at Sheba, and asked, "Is it all right, Sheba?" Sheba laughed. "Yes, it is." After a few microns, she giggled and said, "Boxey, I was only joking." Everyone laughed. Boxey flipped three switches in front of him as Isis took the copilot's seat. Isis also flipped a few switches at her station. Boxey and Isis looked at each other, and nodded. Isis pressed a button, saying, "Adama Shuttle One requesting clearance to launch." Apollo and Starbuck were in the landing bay as the shuttle's engines shut down. Landing bay crew were pushing over a portable staircase towards the shuttle. The shuttle door opened up, and Isis jumped up out of the shuttle, landing on her feet on the deck a good distance from the shuttle. Apollo's and Starbuck's eyes followed Isis as she went up in the air from the shuttle doorway, and landed on the deck. Isis ran straight over to them. "Hey, Commander," she said enthusiastically. "You seem cheerful, Ensign," said Starbuck. "Welcome to the Galactica, Ensign," said Apollo. "I need to talk to you." "Sure, Commander," responded Isis. "Alone." Apollo turned to Starbuck, and said, "Starbuck, bring them to the simulation rooms, please." "I'll see you there, Buddy," responded Starbuck. After everyone else got onto one lift, Apollo and Isis stepped onto another. Apollo spoke to Isis. "That jump you took from the shuttle was not good. I mean, it was great to see, but it was the wrong thing to do." "My apologies, Commander," said Isis. "I'm-" "I understand about your excitement, Isis," Apollo continued, "But no one except the crew that worked on getting you back on your feet are supposed to know about you. As far as everyone else knew, you survived with multiple injuries, and have recovered from it." "Well, it is the truth, Commander." Apollo gave her a slight smile. "But no one is supposed to know HOW you recovered. Siress Tinnia's strict orders." The lift stopped. They got out, and walked straight ahead down the corridor past the one that went across. Isis climbed into the make-shift viper in the simulation room, and Boxey climbed into the one next to it. As soon as the cockpits closed, the lights in the room went out. In the control room next to it, Apollo, Starbuck, Sheba, Toria, Tannia, and Kritter were waiting and watching. "You're clear to launch," Sheba said into the system. Three Cylon fighters approached, firing at Isis. Isis's Kritteronic hand pressed the FIRE button on the control stick. The Cylon fighter in the middle exploded. "I can't get him off my tail, Isis," said Boxey. Isis moved in. She did not use her targeting scanners. Instead, she used her replaced eye, angled her viper, and fired her lasers once and destroyed the fighter tailing Boxey. She turned, fired another Cylon fighter, but because it made an unexpected turn, missed. She turned her viper, and the control stick broke. Her hand jerked when it snapped, and she accidentally snapped the wires inside. "Hey, I have a problem here..." said Isis into her helmetcom. The Cylon fighter fired two rounds, and blew Boxey up. Isis's viper crashed right into the Cylon fighter. In the control room, Toria flipped several switches, and in the simulation room next to it, the lights came on. Apollo, followed by everyone else ran out of the room. Back in the simulation room, Boxey and Isis climbed out of their makeshift vipers. "I'm dead," said Boxey. "What's the problem?" Isis answered it by handing him the broken control stick. Boxey rolled his eyes at it, trying not to smile or laugh. "What happened?" asked Apollo as everyone ran in. "Isis broke the control stick in her viper," responded Boxey as he handed Apollo the broken control stick. Everyone laughed except for Apollo, Boxey and Sheba and Isis. "Sorry, Commander," said Isis sheepishly. "You need to know your own strength, Ensign," said Starbuck. There was more laughter. "Starbuck's right, Ensign Isis," said Apollo. "I know." Starbuck, Boxey and Apollo walked down the corridors. "Well, they should be back on the Adama by now," said Starbuck. "Isis did not even use her targeting scanners." "I know," said Apollo. "She used her eye." "Kritter must have done a better job with it than we all thought," said Boxey. Mojo walked up from the other direction. "Box, you're back," he said. He addressed Apollo and Starbuck respectively. "Commander. Colonel." "I'm glad you're back, Box!" boasted Mojo. "I'm glad to BE back," responded Boxey. Mojo put his hand on Boxey's shoulder, and went to Apollo. "Commander, my apologies for the control stick in the practice room. I did not know that I was being so hard on the equipment. I will be more careful when Boxey and I go in there again." Apollo, Starbuck and Boxey looked at each other. "Don't worry about it, Mojo," responded Apollo. "Boomer will repair it in a centar or two." "And I will inspect my viper to make sure that my control stick will not break on me while I am out in combat. By the way, how did Isis do? Is she a formidable warrior again?" "That is yet to be determined," said Apollo. "But until her control stick broke, she did quite honorably." "And Boomer has already inspected your viper," pointed out Starbuck, "And he said that your viper, including the control stick, is great condition." "Well," said Boxey. "If that was the real thing, CORA would have taken over." "Boxey," responded Starbuck, "we cannot depend on CORA for everything. I mean, what would happen if the CORA unit in the viper malfunctioned? It would be up to the warrior in the viper to either continue on his own, or to get back safely on his own." "And from what I heard from Toria, sometimes it is up to the commander on the bridge." "What do you mean?" asked Starbuck. "From what Toria told me," explained Boxey. "The Adama moved away from Isis's viper at flank speed as she headed towards the launch bay at high speed to give her a chance to slow down." Boxey moved his hands up in the air, trying to explain. "This hand is Isis's viper, and this one is the Adama," he explained waving each hand as he identified them. He moved them across, one hand catching up to the other. "Isis could not slow down, but- the Adama moved away from her, thereby making her entry into the landing bay slower with respect to the Adama than it would have been if the Adama just stayed there. If it was not for someone's fast thinking in the control center of the Adama, Isis would probably have been terminated, and the landing bay a mess." "That maneuver," said Apollo, taking a glance at Mojo, "was Maga's fast thinking." Boxey looked at Mojo. "It was Maga's idea that saved you," said Sheba to Isis. Toria, Tannia, and Kritter were in Sheba's quarters with them. Toria and Isis looked at Tannia, snickering. Embarrassment was evident on her face. "What's so funny?" asked Sheba. "Tannia said that she would kiss whoever thought of that maneuver that you pulled with the Adama while we were out there." Kritter rolled his eyes. "Well, Isis," said Sheba. "Commander Apollo informed me that Captain Boomer will have the control stick in the simulation viper repaired sometime this cycle, and you can try again tomorrow." "How was it explained to Boomer about what happened?" asked Toria. "I mean, from what I was told, Isis's real recovery was supposed to be kept secret." "It was assumed that Ensign Mojo of the Borellian Nomen was a bit rough with it," Sheba explained. "Boxey and Mojo usually practice in it at the end of almost every cycle. It is a form of recreation for them. It just happened to break while Isis was in there." Toria, Tannia, Isis Kritter and Sheba were in the shuttle. Sheba was about to sit in the pilot's seat as she said to Isis, "You will get to take us back, Isis, provided that you do well on your simulation." "All right, Sheba." "Commander," cut in Toria. "Shouldn't you be over there?" indicating to the seat behind the console just behind the pilot's and copilot's seats. "You don't trust me?" asked Sheba with a half a smile. "It's not that, Sheba," said Toria. "You're the ranking officer." Isis climbed into the make-shift viper in the simulation room, and Boxey climbed into the one next to it. "Watch your strength, Isis," said Boxey. He was already in his viper, about to put his helmet on. Isis gave Boxey a 'thumbs up' with her right hand, and proceeded to put on her helmet. As soon as the cockpits closed, the lights in the room went out. In the control room next to it, Apollo, Starbuck, Sheba, Toria, Tannia, and Kritter were waiting and watching. "You're clear to launch," Sheba said into the system. "You may be a good pilot, Isis," said Apollo. They were in Apollo's quarters sharing a drink along with Starbuck, Boxey and Sheba. "But I am going to assign you to other duties, Ensign. Siress Tinnia and President Gaylin also wants this." "But Commander," responded Isis. "All I ever wanted to do was to fly a viper and blow the pogees out of Cylons." "Ensign, I am assigning you to the Galactica temporarily to do just that, as a bridge officer," said Apollo. "Captains Omega and Aa and Flight Captain Rigel are going to teach you about our laser turrets and other bridge operations." Isis looked disappointed, but she understood Apollo. "Keep in mind, Isis," said Sheba. "What you do on the bridge of a baseship, such as the Galactica or the Adama, will have more of an effect in battle with Cylons than in one viper." "But Sheba," responded Isis. "You said that I was one of the best pilots. And that I still am. And you agree with your husband?" "Hey, if I felt that my husband was wrong, I'd tell him!" defended Sheba. "She'd even do it in front of the entire bridge crew," said Apollo. "But Sheba is also right. You may not be blowing pogees out of Cylons in a viper, but you'll have an entire battlestar to do it with. You will start on the Galactica, because their controls are easier to handle. After you get used to that, if you want, you can transfer back to the Adama and work alongside with Valka in handling the laser turrets." "Apollo and Sheba are right," said Starbuck. "And if you're as good on the bridge as you are in your viper, you'll end up in command of the Galactica, and Sheba and I will have to take orders from YOU." Isis giggled. "Silver Spar Squadron has lost a great warrior," Sheba said. "But hopefully, the bridge of the Galactica has gained an invaluable officer. That, Isis, is up to you." "She'll do fine, Sheba," said Starbuck. "I know it." "Yeah," said Apollo. "I can feel it as well. And Siress Tinnia also agrees, but she will need to borrow you for special Council missions." The Rising Star cruised ahead between the Galactica and the Adama. A shuttle from the Rising Star headed towards the Galactica. "I cannot give you medals because of the need to keep this entire mission a secret, but- President Gaylin and I came to congratulate you on a job well done." "It was great to help out a good friend," said Boxey. "Isis and my wife became Colonial warriors together." "And it was a great learning experience for us," said Cassiopeia. "Well, what will become of all of this, anyway, Siress?" asked Toria. "Isis is going to be reassigned to bridge duty," said Gaylin. "I don't think that she will like it," said Tannia. "But it is for thre best," said Tinnia. "Besides, she can do more there than in a viper, with your support." The Galactica moved ahead of the Adama and the Rising Star. A shuttle headed in the direction of the Rising Star from the Galactica. Cassiopeia, Joycelyn, Boxey, Diana, Toria, Kritter and Tannia were in Isis's quarters. Isis seemed to be deep in thought. "Well, if you don't want my cubits," she started to say. "Isis, we're honored by your generosity," said Boxey, "But we worked at it to help a good friend and fellow warrior. It was an educational experience. You have proven that the process could be done. And it's great to see you standing on two feet again." "Sergeant Boxey said it for all of us," said Cassiopeia. She looked around. "I think?" she added. "We're a team," said Kritter. "And that team includes you. You know? We help each other out?" "The cubits would be better used for more research," said Cassiopeia. "I agree," said Joycelyn. "Well, if you don't want to keep your payments, why don't we use it for a party?" suggested Isis. "A welcome back party," said Toria. "But all those cubits would be a BIG party." "Yeah," said Tannia. "It's great to have you back." "Thank you all," said Isis. "But I am not on Silver Spar Squadron anymore," she said glumly. "I've been reassigned to the bridge of the Galactica." "Yeah, we heard from Siress Tinnia," said Toria. "We'll miss you out there." "Well, as my father pointed out, instead of pulverizing the pogees out of Cylons in a viper, you've got an entire battlestar to do it with," said Boxey. "You'll do fine, Isis." "Well, it's getting late in the cycle," said Cassiopeia. The bridge of the Galactica was relatively quiet, as it was the beginning of the next cycle. Omega was at his station, all by himself on the command deck. Apollo and Starbuck walked onto the bridge, and up to the command deck. "Today is when our new bridge officer starts, right, Commander?" asked Omega. "Yes," responded Apollo. "Her name is Isis." "It's not as hard as you think." That was Aa's voice, as she, Rigel and Isis made their way onto the bridge. Isis was wearing a blue bridge officer's uniform. "You just need to be patient with yourself, and you can probably make Sergeant very fast." "Well, it's not rank that's important to me, Captain," responded Isis. "It's being good at it, and perhaps even the best." "Now that's the attitude that you need to have," said Rigel as she took her post. Aa went to her post, and the woman there reliquished the post to her. "I can see it in you, Ensign," she said. "You'll do fine." "Thank you, Captain," said Isis as she headed towards the command deck. Omega got up from his seat, and as Isis reached the command deck. He signaled to the chair, and Isis sat down. "You look good in that uniform," said Starbuck. "Thank you, Colonel," responded Isis. "Commander," she addressed Apollo. Omega started in. "Well, Ensign," he said. "I would like to review these controls. I ask the questions, and you answer to the best of your ability. I'll know what you need to learn." "Understood, Captain." After a generation of fleeing from Cylon treachery, the last battlestar, Galactica, leads a ragtag fugitive fleet on a long and lonely quest. A shining planet known as Earth. Hey! My first BG:TNG without part of the story being some kind of flashback!
